What Cat X-Rays Can Help Evaluate
Depending on your cat’s symptoms, our veterinarians may recommend X-rays of a specific area.
- Chest X-Rays: Chest X-rays may be used to evaluate the heart, lungs, airway, or chest cavity. They may be recommended if your cat has coughing, breathing changes, suspected heart concerns, or signs of illness affecting the chest.
- Abdominal X-Rays: Abdominal X-rays can help evaluate the stomach, intestines, bladder, and other internal structures. They may be recommended for vomiting, constipation, abdominal discomfort, suspected foreign material, or urinary concerns.
- Bone and Joint X-Rays: Bone and joint X-rays may be recommended if your cat is limping, injured, painful, stiff, or having difficulty jumping. They can help evaluate fractures, arthritis, dislocations, and other orthopedic concerns.
- Dental X-Rays: Dental X-rays are used during cat dental procedures to evaluate tooth roots, bone, and disease below the gumline. They are especially important because many painful dental problems in cats cannot be seen from the surface.
What to Expect During a Cat X-Ray Appointment
Our team will help keep your cat as calm and comfortable as possible during the imaging process. In many cases, X-rays are quick, but some cats may need additional handling support or sedation depending on the area being evaluated, their comfort level, and the images needed.
A cat X-ray appointment may include:
- Review of your cat’s symptoms and health history
- Physical examination

- Digital X-rays
- Review of findings
- Discussion of treatment or next steps
- Additional testing if needed

Are X-Rays Safe for Cats?
X-rays use a small amount of radiation to create images of the inside of the body. When X-rays are medically recommended, they can provide valuable information that helps guide your cat’s care.
Our team uses X-rays thoughtfully and only when they are appropriate for your cat’s symptoms, condition, and medical needs. We also take steps to position your cat carefully and complete imaging as efficiently as possible.
Can Cat X-Rays Be Done at Home?
No. Cat X-rays are performed at Scottsdale Animal Hospital, not through mobile veterinary visits. X-rays require specialized imaging equipment and a controlled setting.
Phoenix Mobile Veterinarians may be able to provide an in-home exam or initial evaluation, but if your cat needs X-rays, our team will recommend a hospital visit.
X-Rays and Other Diagnostics
X-rays are helpful, but they may not answer every question on their own. Depending on your cat’s symptoms, our veterinarians may also recommend bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal testing, dental evaluation, ultrasound referral, or other diagnostics.
Combining exam findings with diagnostic testing gives our team a clearer picture of your cat’s health and helps us recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.
